The burglar alarm bit does sound fun since he can go off in different noises once he detects motion in the room. R2 even gets his own personality which leads him to do the occassional wacko things, just like you saw in the movie. And just like Skywalker, a sharp command from you (verbal) will be enough to get his manners. The R2-D2 operates on 4 AA cells as well as some minor assembly.
