Ever since December when the Italian government decided to ban ultra-thin models (these really were too thin) ; things have been in an uproar with several fashion designers claiming that there is no such thing like too-thin. Someone should try explaining this to the teenagers who get influenced by these models and undergo eating disorders. Mario Boselli, the head of Italy's National Fashion Chamber along with big names in teh fashion industry such as Armani, Versace and Prada have decided to support the government's move. Along with ultra-thin models, who are defined as ones with a Body Mass Index of less than 18.5
Reuters gives us an exact idea - 'so that a 1.73 m (5 foot 8 inch) model who weighed less than 55.4 kg (122 lb) would be barred'. Also under-age models, since in recent years the age of models has become so less as to include those from their early teens from participating. The ban comes into effect from February was mainly in response to a Brazilian models death due to eating dis-orders. The government will also include courses on healthy eating as well as exercising.
So not fashionably funky say we! Health comes first, and we hate anorexic models!!
