We were just getting familiar with Wireless USB (WUSB/Certified Wireless USB), and here comes the news that Intel is working on the more advanced——“Wireless USB 1.1” standard. It is expected to increase data transfer rates to 1Gbps and the new standard will move the WUSB frequency to 6GHz range. The current WUSB is capable of sending 480 Mbit/s at distances up to 3 meters and 110 Mbit/s at up to 10 meters, and the operating frequency is 3-4GHz.

Yesterday only, we were talking about the USB 3.0 prototype, which is slated to “deliver a data transfer rate of up to 4.8Gbps - ten times today's 480Mbps USB 2.0 data rate - and introduce optical interconnects to the bus.” And, now news on Wireless USB 1.1——USB devices fortune cannot get better than this. In the end, we the USB consumers benefit from all the work and research the Intel(ligent) minds do.

However, there are pessimists, who are ever eager to pin down our hopes, like NEC's Masami Katagiri, who stated, “wireless USB is only transferring at 40Mbps right now and would have to hit at least 500Mbps to gain 1.1 approval.”

But, when there is Intel and human brain, everything is possible ….
