Recently only, we were discussing about the XO laptops, and what will be the final price tag on the One Laptop per Child machine. The latest news is that the laptop will be officially launched on November 12. And as expected, the cost is no longer $100, but it comes with a price tag of $399. However, there is a little twist to the whole utopian tale. If you or I buy this Linux based laptop---we are purchasing two for $399. One we take home and the other goes to a child living in the developing country.
It is an interesting way of selling a product and at the same time helping someone in third world country. However, the specs are not that great, you get only 512MB RAM, 366 AMD CPU and there is no hard disk.
Who benefits out of this whole deal, of course, the children. We can hope, many people are generous enough to buy one and help the common goal of ensuring one laptop per child in a developing country.
