How many of your remember T1000? If you have seen the movie Terminator 2, you will vividly recall the liquid metal robot——which was capable of changing its shape into arbitrary forms. I am not sure, if that movie inspired Atsuo Takanishi and his colleagues, from the Waseda University in Tokyo, who have been working on the Waseda-Docomo (WD) Robot series since 2003. Something bizarre——if not the movie——might have inspired the Japanese team, but this WD2 Robot does come quite close to mirroring the face of T1000.
WD-2 features 17 facial points, for a total of 56 degrees of freedom. The shape of the mask is “determined by shafts just behind each facial point; driven by a DC motor with a pulley and slide screw the face changes.” It can imitate anyone’s face using a 3D scanner-created image of a person's face.
Zeno was more humanoid …. WD-2 looks more like a monster’s face making demonstration (if you check out the video), but can you expect the Japanese to create something sophisticated.
