Imagine, tomorrow you get up and the Internet is gone. It will be the doomsday for the millions around the world. I am not bringing in my imaginary prophecy, but it is based on a warning given by Verisign, the company that administers the .com domain suffix. According to it, a successful denial-of-service attack on the company’s servers could bring down the Internet.
Ken Silva, the Verisign’s chief security officer, said, “There are attacks attempting to shut down our servers. This would effectively shut down the internet." According to him malicious hackers are operating from countries like Russia, China and Romania, and he seems to be blaming the government for not putting a lid on them, "it would be hard to imagine groups who have this much activity going unnoticed by their governments."
In recent times, there has been an increase in probing denial of service attacks, and if we go by Verisign’s word, the attacks are going to multiply as hackers are getting smarter and assembling larger botnets, “and made up of computers they have infected and are able to control.” The major worry is that companies are investing more in security than development.
Our major worry what if the Internet really shuts down. I guess we all will have a feel of Stone Age.
