My love for anything, remotely, woodish is as strong as my hate for anything pinkish. So, you people can imagine my delight when Hacoa made an announcement about “Ki-Board DIY Kit” (Ki means tree in Japanese). Hitherto, the company has been offering finished products——hand-made wooden keyboards and peripherals.

The finished keyword is crafted by hand and it takes a day to finish one. The hand crafting has resulted in pricey keyboard and the company’s incompetence to ship large orders. The company plans to change both by this DIY masterstroke.

The kit will have a USB keyboard foundation, a wooden plank with the beginnings of keys carved into it (the letters hand-carved into each key), connectors for attaching the finished keys to the keyboard base, a saw, sandpaper and other necessary tools to assemble this wooden keyboard.

The kit comes in maple or walnut. It is priced at $300 and you can buy it from monoDO website (Marubeni Infotec is selling it), which is slated to go online on October 18. I still find the cost a bit on the higher side, but it is made of wood … so no problems.
