Canada to remove speed limits

Got your attention that did it? Well if that conjures up images of driving up and down the country like on the Autobahns sans any speed limits, then its time to bring you back to reality. They wont be having any more speed limit signs since they wont be needing any.

The Canadian government is trialling a new anti-speeding device that can automatically slow down a vehicle against a driver’s will. The new device uses a GPS locater, and a speed map and can override the car’s manual controls.

I mean WTF ? There have been instances of crazy kids being able to hack into the traffic authorities networks in the past and play havoc with the signals. Whats to promise that they cant do the same with cars that can speed up or down when controlled by a central computer? I never was crazy about the idea of having cars that drive themselves either in the first place for precisely such reasons.

“The technology has the ability of just saying, ‘OK the posted speed limit is 50, so we’ll let you go 55, that’s it,’ ” Transport Canada researcher Paul Boase told the Edmonton Journal. Ten volunteers have already tried the device, which for testing purposes was fixed so drivers found the gas pedal difficult (though not impossible) to press if they were over the limit.
