In what appears to be a first, Blackberry representatives have given way to the Indian government who had recently threatened to shut down Blackberry citing security concerns. In return Blackberry has now agreed to give the government access to mails sent using Blackberry devices. The Indian government was concerned since it could not snoop on these mails. the problem was compounded by the fact that Blackberry servers are only located in the United States and Canada which is obviously out of jurisdiction for India.

There are mirror servers in India. The mails sent using Blackberry devices are encrypted at 256 bit levels. This means that while mails sent from Blackberries to other phones may be intercepted, its not possible to do the same if both the recipient and sender use Blackberries. However things are set to change with Blackberry giving way to the Indian governments concerns over security.

They have agreed to give access to the security agencies to the mails sent from the BlackBerry phones. One of the proposal given by the company is to set up their server in India.
