Samsung phones will now have Garmin providing their requirements for GPS services. Garmin will provide its turn-by-turn, voice prompted navigation directly on Samsung phones. The navigation service is based on Garmin Mobile XT software.
While we do not know that Samsung will only use technology from Garmin for their cell phones, the Samsung i780 was specifically mentioned.
Seems Garmin is desperate to garner a foothold in the mobile phone industry. And with good reason. With cell phones getting bigger and better, many users who want more value for money are simply buying handsets which can double as their GPS while they drive thus saving a few hundred dollars.
In such a scenario its important that companies like Garmin who are dependent on their GPS and maps for revenue diversify. Roger Jollis, Garmin's director of OEM & mobile marketing says that Garmin's on-board and off-board phone navigation solutions are now available on over 500 different handsets, including Samsung mobile phones.
