My dentist says that brushing is not a matter of which paste you use nor is it a matter of how much paste you use. Toothpaste so it happens is merely a lubricant and the only beneficial activity that you get is during the motion of brushing. Of course she cites a minimum of 3 minutes brushing each, twice a day for the teeth to be healthy.
But try explaining this to the young ones who think it a waste of time and you would know the impossible task in front of every parent.
This is precisely where technology comes into play effectively. Researchers in Taiwan have made it into a game. LED modules containing 3 LED's are mounted onto one end of the toothbrush. A web camera mounted onto a mirror in front can track this. The camera uses computer software to track the movements of the toothbrush. This information is fed as an input into the computer, which displays a game that the Taiwan university researchers have developed. The game displays a set of graphic colorful teeth which become white as and when the child moves his/her toothbrush over the teeth.
This makes sure that each and every tooth is effectively brushed for the right amount of time and no remote corner is missed. Lets hope they simplify the technology and also make it affordable for every home. With ready made foods, soft drinks and junk food eating at all time highs, we need tech on our side in the battle for better health.
