As a kid I must have seen the original Robocop movie a zillion times. Even acted like I was Robocop for a few days after watching it the first time. The theme of an evil robot versus a good robot was fantastic though it kind of freaked me out, using a dead man as a robot. Anyway having an evil robot go out of control was so cool when he goes on his destructive spree. It was cool though only because it happened on screen.
Turns out that life has an eery way of imitating the big screen. The SWORDS units (Special Weapons Observation Reconnaissance Detection Systems) used by the army have now been stopped and the plug has been pulled on the project. When asked, the army had this to say: the gun started moving when it was not intended to move. So you can only imagine what was but a step away.
Though that doesnt mean that the army has given up using robots as fighting machines. They are still intent on using these things and the new version called as MAARS (Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System robot) will likely succeed the SWORDS.
