I have often mentioned Samsungs fascination for creating all sorts of records and this latest claim just seems to confirm all of them at the same time. Samsung is now claiming to have developed the smallest, thinnest and highest capacity solid state hard disk drive ever. The 2.5-inch, 256GB multi-level cell (MLC) based solid state drive (SSD) uses a SATA II interface.

The new 256GB MLC SSD also boasts a data encryption process that prevents data stored on the SSD from being accessed in an unauthorized manner, also after the SSD is removed from the PC. Samsung is expected to begin mass production of the 2.5-inch, 256GB SSD by the end of 2008. A 1.8-inch version of the 256GB SSD is also expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2008.
The added safety is wonderful news for the consumer as is the fact that SSDs are finally picking up. However one only hopes that the prices of SSDs start dropping soon enough so as to make them desirable to the average Joe. The SSD enjoys an unchallenged superiority over the traditional hard drives but the cost factor is just too high for normal users to seriously consider getting one.
