Lollipop Lady goes Hi-Tech

So called because of the lollipop signs that they carry, the lollipop lady just went hi-tech. A common sight in Australia and UK, the lollipop lady or guy is a much respected person who ensures that the streets are safe for the young ones to cross. They are most commonly seen at school timings near schools. However in the UK, they have been facing some agressive drivers who refuse to pay heed to their signs.

Now the signs are to be fitted with miniature cameras, one facing forward and the other backwards, to trap offenders. Motoring groups warned that measures needed to be put in place to ensure innocent motorists were not unfairly targeted.

Latest figures show there were more than 1,400 reported lollipop-rage incidents last year in the United Kingdom.

Under British law, a lollipop stop sign has the same legal power as a red traffic light, with failure to abide resulting in a 1,000 pound ($1,969) fine and a three-point driving licence penalty.

Well, so far in Australia we abide by the laws even when it means that the lollipop lady asks us to stop when the kids are far away. So its unlikely to be put into action here. Just as well, we have had it with speed cams and red light cams that are positioned surreptiously everywhere.
