At 10$ apiece, this is easily the worlds cheapest airbag. Heck, I didnt even know they could make safety equipment that actually functions at that low a cost. But Tata motors which had promised consumers that they would not be given a raw deal with the Nano has asked the automotive safety component maker Autoliv IFB India to develop a $10 air bag for its small car Nano.

Given how airbags in normal cars (read ones that cost much more then the 2000$ Nano) dont function properly at times, I wonder how good the Autoliv airbag can be. However they certainly have chosen the right partner to get it done from. Autoliv is the largest manufacturer of air bags with 28% market share in the world. They may be able to pull off the deed given the large volumes that the Nano is expected to sell.
