Google Android steps beyond Apple iPhone

Posted by Funkyguy on June 2, 2008 2:31 PM

If Apple made the slide to unlock popular with the way you could unlock a cell-phone, Google promises to go one step further. Googles Android system that is soon to arrive on cell phones will allow the user to set up a special (personalised) shape with which to unlock his or her phone. This could be a common shape or something more complex. It would serve as a basic security lock as well since it would not be possible for a stranger to unlock your handset immediately.

A special mobile version of Pacman was also displayed on the Android. A magnifying tool will allow users to zoom into webpages and images on the net.

Handsets with Googles Android operating system are due to be released in the second half of the year. Samsung, LG and Motorola have all said that they would be bringing out cell phones with Android on them. Googles set of free, popular Web services -- GMail, GChat, Google Calendar, etc. will also be play a leading role in Android phones. The Android is clearly the first serious competition that the iPhone will be seeing. That and of course the other phones such as Xperia X1. However Google has the clout and brand name to more than make up for Apples.
