I never did understand why Macbooks could be so overpriced. The sales pitch for the Air nearly had me convinced though that Apple is a do-gooder and its all the fault of those SSD manufacturers who were not doing enough to cut costs.

Well to be fair to Apple, they did cut the cost of the Air once the prices of SSDs dropped. But what about the Macbooks? The pricing is certinaly one way of ensuring that Macs remains exclusive ; something that Apple users crave to be.
Apple can certainly cut down the price of the Macbook without loosing profitability by simply offering versions sans the optical drives. The acceptance of the Apple Air has shown that it can be done succesfully. And with profits to be dipping to 30% from a high of 36% as revealed by Apple in their latest financial report, this is one way that a leading tech buff thinks is going to be the future.
After all Apple already has a huge market for its goods, the price is sometimes the only hindrance. A low cost iPhone will bring greater profits to the company than a higher costing iPhone ever did. Perhaps the same logic could be applicable in the case of Macbooks?
