Unlike most headlines that I love to play up in order to draw you guys in, this one unfortunately may very well be true. Nintendo is facing a ban on U.S. sales of some controllers for its Wii and GameCube systems after it lost a bid to overturn a $21 million patent-infringement verdict.
A U.S. district judge in Texas has banned sales of the Wii Classic Controller, WaveBird controller and Nintendo GameCube controller after Anascape Ltd. won the case against Nintendo. The ban is currently on hold as Nintendo appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Exactly what violates the patent yet is unclear. For example , the rectangular Wii remote, when not used with the Wii Classic, and the Nunchuk controller attached to the remote dont violate the patent at the heart of the case.
However any sort of bans or adverse publicity cant be good for Nintendo who are well on their way to become the top most video game seller in the United States. Since launch the Nintendo Wii and the recently launched Wii Fit have been tremendously successful and major money makers for the company.
As of last month, U.S. consumers had purchased almost 10.9 million Wii consoles since the player was introduced in November 2006.
