SanDisk bets big on the WORM

Posted by Funkyguy on July 17, 2008 4:48 AM

SanDisk has been talking about the WORM since a long time now. Before you begin imagining any slimy slithering creatures that may have something to do with SanDisk , WORM stands for Write Once Read Many SD card. Like a CD-ROM , this card cannot be re-written to once the data has been imprinted on it. The chief benefit of doing this is that the life of the card is improved dramatically.

SanDisk claims a 100 year lifetime for the new cards and there is no way that a user could delete or alter files on the cards. Currently the largest WORM card is only 128 MB but SanDisk are hopeful of coming up with larger capacities in the future once demand picks up. Pricing is currently available upon request . I think we all know what that means when a company doesnt want to disclose the pricing publicly.
