Waterless Washing Machine
July 10, 2008

Somehow waterless and wash dont seem like words that would go well in the same line. But technology has the ability of making the impossible become possible. That much you must accept at the very least before I go into details of a washing machine that does not need water to do its job.

Surprisingly, this is not the first washing machine to go waterless. That one was the Electrolux Kaionwave. Perhaps its a sign of the changing times with fresh water becoming increasingly scarce on a planet over burdened by humans.

The Xeros washing machine uses just one cup of water, with a bit of detergent thrown in to dissolve the stains and dirt. Next, thousands of reusable plastic chips (solid solvent) are dropped in to beat the clothes clean and absorb stains. When the cycle is over, a grill opens up at the bottom to collect the chips. Clothes are apparently left almost dry (and hopefully chip-free), eradicating the need to fling them in the dryer.

Tests prove the machine can get rid of all kinds of stains and the chips can be used up to 100 times. The machine saves not just water but even energy (2% of a traditional washing machine).
