WiFi routers with an eco-conscience

Posted by Funkyguy on July 30, 2008 2:12 PM

Wi-Fi routers wouldnt be one of the places that you would look in your endeavour of becoming green. Yet, these devices stay on 24/7 and act as a major power eater since they are beaming out at full power during all this time ; irrespective of whether someone is using it or not. I would be the first person to agree that its next to impossible to manually power on and off the router given that different people use the net at different times.

D-Link has come up with smart routers which promise to solve the issue without needing any intervention from you. Its expected that the newer routers will help in energy savings of upto 40% over the traditional ones. The routers are capable of detecting cable length as well as link status, adjusting power accordingly instead of running at full steam all the time as most of the other routers currently do.

The routers can also be programmed to shut down the Wi-Fi radio when it is not in use so that power can be saved. The three Wi-Fi routers to feature D-Link Green Ethernet technology are the D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router DIR-665, Xtreme N Duo Media Router DIR-855, and the Xtreme N Gaming Router DGL-4500. The routers themselves arent new; the Green technology is new to them though. Power savings using the Green technology is claimed to be 32% on the DIR-655, 41% on the Dir-855, and 31% on the DGL-4500.
