26000 Years of Clean Energy under our feet

Posted by Funkyguy on August 31, 2008 2:48 PM

From just 1 percent of the countrys geothermal capacity. I am talking about the land down-under, Australia. Its the only country to be investing billions in geothermal energy research. The second position in terms of money invested to reserach this technology is helf by technology company Google. They are pumping in hundreds of millions too since they want their server farms (notorious for their extensive power consumption) to run on cheap and green energy as soon as possible.

Geo-thermal energy is one of the best ways forward.

This little known about way of energy production is responsible for meeting much of Icelands energy needs. In Iceland, there are five major geothermal power plants which produce about 26% (2006) of the country's electricity. In addition, geothermal heating meets the heating and hot water requirements for around 87% of the nation's buildings.

The amount of energy that could be generated from geothermal power is potentially huge. The Australian group estimates that just 1 percent of the country's geothermal capacity could provide 26,000 years worth of clean electricity. Australia hopes to meet 40% of its energy needs by renewable sources by 2020.
