While a lot of folks love to think that Hydrogen could be one of the ways of powering vehicles of the future. This so called green tech has a very basic flaw. Humans till onw havent been very succesful at producing a lot of hydrogen either cheaply or in ways that doesnt harm the environment. The analogy is the same as driving an electric car which produces no fumes but runs on electricity which is produced the good ol fashioned way - by burning coal.
However technology is slowly but surely catching up. Researchers have just found a way to produce a lot of hydrogen without running into either of these problems. An international team of researchers led by Monash University in Australia has used manganese, a chemical involved in photosynthesis, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using only sunlight and an electrical potential of 1.2 volts.
Scientists claim the process could provide a clean, cheap method of producing hydrogen for fuel cells and energy generation.
Currently, thirty percent of globally produced hydrogen is made from oil, and 18% is produced by coal, rendering the subsequent clean combustion moot.
