In order to be better safe than sorry, the NSW state government has decided to equip ferries that run the harbor routes at night with Night vision technology. This would enable them to navigate safely and ensure that no accidents occur on account of possible collisions.

The night vision announcement comes six months after a fatal collision between a fishing vessel and a runabout on Sydney harbour, and 18 months after four people lost their lives in an accident involving a ferry and a pleasure cruiser.
There are 31 ferries which would need to be equipped at a total cost of $1 million to tax payers. The ferries are currently undergoing trials to see if the technology is suitable. The tech would allow the ferries to see smaller vessels which are often difficult to spot in the dark.
