Sandisk Smart Flash Drives : Refuse to connect to malware ridden PCs

Posted by Funkyguy on October 24, 2008 2:50 PM

Ever since I took my girl friends flash drive to Uni, it never was the same again. Apparently a number of nasty trojans have made it their home. Any attempts by me to remove them forcibly were met with stiff resistance and failure and my ultimate try to format the stick resulted in it being fried.

Given that the school boasts itself on having the most ultimate up to date Anti Virus software from a reputed firm (which I shall refrain from naming) ; this was certainly what I did not expect. I have tried since then to keep my data transfers to a minimum or using the internet / email to do so , but there are still times when I need a memory stick to accomplish whats needed.

It seems the only solution would be to get one of these Sandisk flash drives which are smart enough to refuse to connect to PCs on which a virus or trojan is detected.

Better safe than sorry seems to be Sandisks new mantra and I for one am all for it. SanDisk's drives already store files in an encrypted partition, a security feature designed to protect them in case the drive is lost or stolen. SanDisk did not announce new pricing for the drives, which currently sell for just under $88 for a 1-Gbyte drive, on up to just over $216 for a 4-Gbyte model.
