Nokia N97 : Santas flavor of the season?
December 4, 2008

Sure seems to be , with all the gadgetry thats packed into the N97 ; no geek would mind Santa swooping down the chimmney with one of these beauties. Its a desktop, laptop, cell phone all rolled into one. Combined with Nokias experience in making smart phones, the Nokia N97 promises to provide significant grief to competitors.

Consider what the N97 gives you - a communicator style interface which allows a full QWERTY keypad to slide out from under with the screen going into landscape mode automatically for ease of surfing the net as well as editing documents. A stunning 48 gigs of storage mean that Nokias claim of the N97 being a computer becomes much harder to ignore. The differences between a smart phone and a computer were never blurred more.

A significant feature that is worth mentioning is the manner in which the cell phone utilises its A-GPS capability. The Nokia N97 introduces the concept of social location. With integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass, the Nokia N97 mobile computer intuitively understands where it is. The Nokia N97 makes it easy to update social networks automatically with real-time information, giving approved friends the ability to update their 'status' and share their social location as well as related pictures or videos.

The Nokia N97 supports up to 48 GB of storage, including 32 GB of on-board memory, expandable with a 16 GB microSD card for music, media and more. This is complemented by excellent music capabilities, full support for the Nokia Music Store and continuous playback time of up to 1.5 days. The Nokia N97 also has a 5-Megapixel camera with high-quality Carl Zeiss optics, 16:9 and DVD quality video capture, and support for services like Share on Ovi for immediate sharing over HSDPA and WLAN.

The Nokia N97 is expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 550 before taxes or subsidies.

Dialaphone UK has dug up some additional features which were not on the press release - Assisted GPS with Nokia Maps v3, an FM radio and transmitter, N-gage compatibility, a 3,5mm jack plug, TV-out, video shooting at 30fps, video call lens and a hefty battery which should kick out enough juice for 37 hours of music and nearly 5 hours of video playback are just a few of the other fantastic features on the N97.
