Astronauts get to pee in their pants : Space Diapers

Posted by Yash on January 7, 2009 2:55 PM

The Japanese space scientists have decided to turn over a small percentage of Japans fascination with toilets to space research. It has resulted in the development of space diapers - an invention which I am told will allow astronauts to pee in their pants - literally.

They could even shit in them without bothering to pull out the toilet paper for this diaper automatically detects when the astronauts relieved himself and activates a rear-mounted suction unit that draws the waste away from the body through tubes into a separate container. It washes and dries the wearer after each use.

The Space Diapers / toilet will be tested at the International Space Station soon. Considering that this is controlled by computers, I am beginning to see why HAL went berserk in 2001: A Space Odyssey. If they had anything similar on that ship then it would have been just a matter of weeks before the AI rebelled.
